God of War 3 PC Black Screen and Crash Fixes
Updated · SpartanPort 2.7.0
For a black screen or crash, use the current release and open Advanced → Log. Match the error or location below and follow its next action. For a continuing failure, preserve the log before launching again.

Why does the launcher reject my game folder or update?
For prepare failed: out of bounds, an empty-file error, expected PS4 SELF or a missing-file message:
- Update an older port so preparation errors identify more specific failures.
- Read the named file or metadata error in Advanced → Log.
- Check the selected root against Game version. Its required files must be readable and nonempty.
- Check that a separate update has the same title ID and a separate path.
- If preparation still fails, preserve its full log and use the report checklist.
What does code=0xa0020001 mean?
For guest raised debug exception code=0xa0020001, the game stopped while reading its files; the selected game folder may be incomplete.
- Close the game and check the selected Game folder against the required directory layout.
- Check that
eboot.bin,sce_moduleandsce_sysare present, and that required files are readable and nonempty. Keep the rest of the game content in that root. - If using a separate Update folder, check its title ID and path against the update-folder steps.
- If the error continues with a complete folder, attach the full log, title ID and game version to a startup report.
How do I fix Windows guest memory error 1450?
For cannot create ... guest memory (error 1450), Windows failed to reserve the required virtual memory. The current launcher stops and displays advice with the log. Older versions can leave a black screen with an FPS counter.
For this allocation error, configure the Windows page file:
- Press Win + R, type
SystemPropertiesAdvancedand open it. - Under Performance, click Settings.
- Open Advanced, then Virtual memory → Change.
- Clear Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
- Select drive C: and Custom size. The port's example is 16384 MB initial and 24576 MB maximum; allow the drive space for those values.
- Click Set, then OK, and restart Windows.
- If using a higher render resolution, lower it before starting again.
If the allocation error continues, send the new log, selected resolution and available memory with your report. The page-file values describe virtual memory on disk.
What if the game stays black or closes during the first load?
Read Advanced → Log before another launch. Follow a specific file, memory or GPU error first. If the failure persists, keep the CPU, GPU, driver, title ID, game version and exact point where it stops for a report.
For a Gaia opening or first-level crash that continues in 2.7.0, a general fix is still outstanding. Include whether it stops after New Game, during the cinematic or at the first playable scene. Add that evidence to the first-level loading issue.
A crash naming ow-graphics-hook64.dll calls for closing Overwolf before another start. For STOP: this CPU lacks, check the exact processor's AVX support and include the full message in your report.
Why does it close just after the Santa Monica logo?
This startup crash remains unresolved on some systems in 2.7.0. A memory, missing-file or GPU error in Advanced → Log has its own action above; use that action if the log names one.
If the log ends at the logo or opening without one of those errors, preserve last_run.log before launching again. Include the exact stopping point, CPU, GPU/driver, operating system and game ID/update in the startup-crash report. For the first playable Gaia load, use the first-level loading report.
Why does Linux say a GLIBC version is missing?
An older AppImage that says GLIBC_2.44 not found needs replacement with the current release file. The current AppImage requires glibc 2.39 or newer. Check ldd --version and use a system meeting that requirement. Continue with the Linux launch steps; preserve a new error for the report checklist if it still fails.
Did an older build write into the new shader cache?
Don't share one shader cache between the current build and an older build: their numbering differs. If you launched an older build against the new cache:
- Close the game and every port version.
- Find the active Saves folder, using the directory guide.
- Delete only
cache/CUSA01623/disk_shaders.bininside that active user-data directory. The default Windows path isuser/cache/CUSA01623/disk_shaders.binbeside the program. The default Linux path is~/.local/share/spartanport/user/cache/CUSA01623/disk_shaders.bin. - Start the current build again. It rebuilds that cache and can stutter during compilation.
Keep savedata and savedata_backups. For a continuing fault, save the new log and mention both port versions and the shared cache path. For cache size or a fault appearing only on reuse, use the shader controls.
Does an older version crash after Alt+Tab or at a timed QTE?
Update an older build for the fullscreen window-restoration fix. If the current build still crashes after Alt + Tab, choose Borderless, save and start again. Send the failure log and both GPU models for a hybrid laptop.
For a 2.6.0 timed-QTE crash on an older AVX CPU, update to 2.7.0. Its QTE hook uses base x86-64 instructions in place of the older BMI1 instruction. If it still crashes, keep the exact prompt, CPU model and log for a report.
Why do textures turn orange, yellow or white?
If textures become orange or corrupt after playing for a while or after Rage, reload the checkpoint or restart the game. If the fault returns, preserve a log and picture from that session and record how long you played and what happened before it changed.
For colour corruption or incorrect lighting that continues, try the readback workaround:
- Open Performance → GPU data.
- Turn Deferred GPU readbacks off.
- Click Save and restart the game.
- If the image stays wrong, turn Deferred GPU readbacks back on, click Save and restart again. Disabling it adds GPU waits and can increase stutters; enabled readbacks ran heavy scenes roughly twice as fast in the 2.3.0 comparison.
For a continuing fault, include a picture, GPU driver and the changed option in your report. GPU data settings explains the choices.
How do I remove black lines in the lighting?
Set Performance → GPU data → Game multisampling to Automatic on Windows with an AMD or Intel GPU. That mode uses single-sample images on those drivers to avoid the depth-buffer fault that produces black lighting lines.
If lines appear on another GPU, choose Off. Click Save and restart the game. If the lines persist, attach a screenshot, exact GPU/driver, selected multisampling mode and log through the report checklist.
Why do textures break at certain angles with 16x filtering?
Lower or turn off Graphics → Anisotropic filtering, click Save and restart the game. This targets the angle-dependent texture corruption associated with 16x filtering. If it continues, attach pictures from the affected angle, the selected filtering level and the log.
What if loading stops at Hades, the Forge, the Caverns or the Chain of Balance?
For the Linux Hephaestus void, reload a manual save. Other hangs below remain unresolved in 2.7.0. For an input sequence that fails only at high engine rates, try the 60 FPS workaround. The Realm of Hades gap below also has a report at 60 FPS.
| Where it stops | What can I do? |
|---|---|
| After Hades | Keep a save from before the transition and add the stuck-session log to the Hades loading report. |
| Forge after the statue fight | Keep the entry save and report whether loading stops or geometry is missing in the Forge transition report. |
| Near Hephaestus on Linux | Reload your most recent manual save and return to the area. If it stays empty, attach a picture, distribution, driver, log and pre-area save to the area-loading report. |
| Caverns / Cav600, Omega loading icon | If using mods, turn Load mods off, save and retry the transition. If it still hangs, add the log and pre-transition save to the Caverns loading report, including whether mods were disabled. |
| Chain of Balance grapple, wing/steam sequence or endless loading | Keep the approach save and identify the grapple hang, wing/steam freeze or endless loading when adding the log to its report. |
| Missing floor near Athena on the chain | Keep a pre-area save; add a picture, render size, driver and log to the Athena missing-floor report. |
| After Poseidon | Keep the preceding save and add the transition and log to the Poseidon loading report. |
| Realm of Hades gap, still blocked at 60 FPS | Keep the preceding save; include the gap, input device and log in the Hades gap report. |
Keep the pre-area save for recovery and reproduction. Before another launch replaces the log, copy it and add the hardware, game version and settings to the matching report.
Why does it crash at a particular upgrade, location or save?
These location-specific crashes remain unresolved in 2.7.0. Preserve last_run.log before launching again and keep a save from before the failing action:
| Crash point | What can I do? |
|---|---|
| Labyrinth after acquiring Boreas Icestorm | Add the scene, preceding save and log to the Labyrinth crash report. |
| Upgrading the Bow of Apollo | Keep the pre-upgrade save; add the game version and log to the Bow upgrade report. |
| Upgrading the Nemesis Whip | Keep the pre-upgrade save; add the game version and log to the weapon-upgrade crash report. |
| A later visit to Hephaestus | Keep the save before the visit and add the transition and log to the Hephaestus return report. |
| Loading a Chamber of the Flame save | Keep the affected slot and an earlier save; attach the load log to the Chamber of the Flame report. |
For a different crash location, name it and describe the last action in a new report.
What should I do about Intel or RX 580 graphics failures?
For a computer with integrated and dedicated graphics, first select the dedicated card under Performance → GPU data → Graphics card, click Save and restart. The following faults on the affected GPU remain unresolved in 2.7.0:
| Hardware and symptom | What can I do? |
|---|---|
| Intel HD 630: black or blue real-time 3D; videos and HUD visible | Use a dedicated GPU if available; otherwise attach the GPU driver, picture and log to the HD 630 rendering report. |
| Intel Iris Xe: startup or level-loading crash, black screen or hang | Use a dedicated GPU if available; for a continuing fault, identify the exact loading point in the first-level report, Iris Xe crash report or Iris Xe loading report. |
Intel UHD: Device lost during submit |
Use a dedicated GPU if available; for a continuing fault, attach the transition, driver and complete log to the Intel UHD device-loss report. |
| Intel Iris Plus / Iris Xe: excessive lighting, white regions or flashing colours | Try the readback colour steps, or select a dedicated GPU if available. If the image stays wrong, restore readbacks and add a picture, driver and log to the excessive-lighting report or flashing-colour report. |
AMD RX 580: unsupported Format10_11_11 surface and crash |
Select another dedicated GPU if available; otherwise attach the driver and complete log to the RX 580 format report. |
What if the view is tiny, shifted, or missing water and floors?
For a small corner view on older AMD drivers or a missing Hephaestus/Judges area, try the matching workaround:
- Small 3D picture in a corner on RX 6600 or RX 5600 XT with Adrenalin 24.x: update the graphics driver and use Native (1920 × 1080) rendering. Adrenalin 26.8.1 cleared the box on an RX 6600 with port 2.5.0, and on an RX 5600 XT after upgrading from 24.7.1. If the box remains, attach a full-window picture, render size, driver and log to the small-picture report.
- Missing area near Hephaestus or the Judges: reload the most recent manual save and return to the area. If it stays broken, attach the pre-area save, picture and log to the area-loading report. The Linux Hephaestus void uses this same workaround.
- Corrupted AMD sky or effects: this fault remains unresolved in 2.7.0. Attach the scene, GPU driver, picture and log to the AMD sky report.
- Other geometry, water, floor or camera faults: these remain unresolved in 2.7.0. Add the exact scene, picture and log to the waterfall-distortion report, Poseidon floor/camera report or Underworld-texture report.
For a stretched or shifted power effect, turn off Performance → GPU data → Fast screen effects (Rage of Sparta, weapons), save and restart. If the same effect remains wrong, attach pictures and settings to your report.
On ultrawide, pre-rendered videos keep 16:9 borders. Some menus, HUD and QTE layouts also retain 16:9 placement. Choose a 16:9 render size if that layout gets in the way; Settings lists the current aspect-ratio choices.
Why can I not pass a ledge or finish a QTE above 60 FPS?
Press F9, or R3 + L1 + R1, until the engine-rate notice shows 60 FPS. Retry the affected movement or mash sequence, then switch back afterward. The change applies live.
For a Hermes prompt that is late or missing even at 60 FPS, a fix is still outstanding. Record the exact prompt and timing with your input mapping in the Hermes prompt report. For a continuing 60 FPS blocker, include the scene and preceding save in the report. Controls explains keyboard rotation and Automatic QTE.
Why do controls feel delayed with the performance overlay?
Turn Graphics → Show performance overlay off, save and restart. If it still feels delayed, record the platform, input device, connection type and frame settings with the log. Settings explains queued frames and input delay.
Why is sound missing, out of sync or in the wrong language?
For silence on an older Windows build, update the port. The current audio path falls back from WASAPI to DirectSound when an output fails, unless a driver was chosen manually. If you previously forced SDL_AUDIO_DRIVER=directsound for that failure, remove the override and retry the automatic fallback.
Silence after loading USERDATA, together with an unresponsive Options menu, remains unresolved in 2.7.0. Keep that save and attach the startup log and output device to the saved-preferences audio report. Echo or audio desynchronisation during Hephaestus' cinematic also remains unresolved. Include that scene, output device and log in the Hephaestus audio report.
The launcher's Game language is used on the game's first start. Afterward, change text under Options → Game Settings → Game Text and speech under Options → Audio → Speech. Choose a language present in the selected game files.
What do I send when the problem continues?
Open Advanced → Log after the failure. Copy its text or attach last_run.log from the active Saves folder. Windows defaults to user\last_run.log beside the program; Linux defaults to ~/.local/share/spartanport/user/last_run.log. Saves identifies custom roots.
Search the project issues for the matching symptom, then add:
- Port version, operating system, CPU, GPU and graphics driver.
- Render resolution, engine rate, frame limit and changed graphics options.
- Game title ID and game update version.
- Exact steps, location, last action and the complete failure log.
- A picture for graphics faults; a save from before a location bug when relevant.
- Controller model and connection type for input faults; output device for audio faults.
- Enabled mods and whether the problem remains with Load mods off.
Preserve the log before a new start replaces it. For missing progress, use Saves and restoration.
